Mi Abuela Rosa

Meaning of the Piece: Mi Abuela Rosa

Exciting News!

I’m beyond thrilled to share that my soft sculpture, Mi Abuela Rosa, is currently on display in the Big Softy exhibit at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center in Las Vegas! 🎨💖 This exhibition, running now through March 27, 2025, explores softness in all its forms—through materials, textures, and deeply personal storytelling.

Mi Abuela Rosa is a tribute to the enduring love of family, healing, and memory. This piece weaves together fragments of my life:
🪡 Floral hand stitching from my late grandmother, Rosa
🧥 The sleeves of my sister’s sweater
👰 A piece of my wedding dress, kept after my divorce
💐 Baby’s breath from my daughter to her girlfriend

The embroidered words “free hugs” and “healing is the present” remind me to embrace the moment and practice self-compassion. A patch that reads “stop and smell the flowers” encourages reflection on life’s small but meaningful moments.

This sculpture honors the love of grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and friends—those who shape us, guide us, and continue to impact us long after they’re gone. Mi Abuela Rosa is an invitation to feel, heal, and cherish the relationships that define us.
